Differences in ferrites of various stainless steels

2023 12/07

430 ferritic stainless steel

Steel with a chromium content of over 12% can prevent oxidation caused by natural factors, and is called stainless steel. It belongs to 430 ferritic stainless steel, with low thermal expansion rate, excellent formability and oxidation resistance. The code in JIS is 430, hence also known as 430 stainless steel.

Application of 430 Ferritic Stainless Steel

430 stainless steel (16Cr) is commonly used in the production of household appliances, heat-resistant appliances, burners, household appliances, Category 2 tableware, kitchen sinks, external decorative materials, bolts, nuts, CD rods, and screens.

The difference between 430 stainless steel and 304, 316 austenitic stainless steel

430 stainless steel and 304, 316 austenitic stainless steel are identified through spectroscopic analysis and chemical element analysis.

304 and 316 are both austenitic stainless steels, and 316 is made by adding molybdenum to it. Therefore, the anti seawater and anti rust ability of 316 stainless steel is much better than that of 304.

The difference between 304, 316, and 430 lies in their rust prevention performance. 304 and 316 contain elements such as nickel and molybdenum in addition to chromium, and are non-magnetic. Therefore, the rust prevention performance of 304/316 austenitic stainless steel is much better than that of 430 stainless steel, and the price is also much higher.

Can 430 stainless steel magnets hold on?

304 and 316 do not conduct magnetism and cannot be attracted with a magnet. Generally, it does not generate heat in high-voltage electromagnetic environments, so it is commonly used. Martensitic and 430 ferritic stainless steels, as well as precipitation hardened stainless steels, are magnetic and can be attracted by magnets.

Will 430 stainless steel rust?

430 stainless steel cannot resist oxidation caused by chemicals in the air. As acidic chemicals in the air become more and more abundant, 430 stainless steel may still experience oxidation (rusting) due to non natural factors after a period of infrequent use.

Which is better, 430 stainless steel or 304?

304 austenitic stainless steel has excellent corrosion resistance and no magnetism. Relatively speaking, austenitic stainless steel 304 is better than 430 ferritic stainless steel.

How much more expensive is 430 stainless steel compared to 304?

Generally speaking, austenitic stainless steel 304 is twice as expensive as 430 stainless steel.
